Tanoa: colour, flavour and good hearts

Some places begin with a simple wish: to make someone feel good. For us, that is Tanoa. An independent, Black-owned café in Bairro Alto, with eleven tables and room for people from many backgrounds. We created a place to eat well, put the weight of the day down and feel comfortable being yourself.

Building a café takes courage, work and a willingness to begin again. Some mornings are easy; others ask more of us. Our way forward is to return to what brought us here: caring about the food, welcoming people warmly and making room for joy. Resilience can mean keeping a good heart while learning to do things better.

Behind Tanoa is also Miriam's story. She grew up in Amadora and started working at a young age. Before opening the café, she built a career in management, learning to make decisions, work with people and turn challenges into solutions. That experience is part of Tanoa every day.

Tanoa's story is intertwined with a love story that began back in school. Miriam and Gonçalo grew up together, sharing dreams, changes and difficult moments, before deciding to build something of their own. On 15 October 2021, that dream found a home on Rua da Rosa in Bairro Alto: Tanoa Café opened its doors.

Later came Isabella, their daughter, bringing a new meaning to building something for the future. Between family, the kitchen, the team and their guests, Tanoa remains a shared effort, shaped by ambition and care.

None of this means the journey has been easy. There are demanding days, difficult choices and moments when starting again takes strength. That is exactly why we want to create a place where people can breathe, feel welcome and leave a little happier than when they arrived.

For us, colour is part of that joy. Salmon, seafoam green and butter yellow bring the lightness we want to feel in the café. A colourful plate, a lovely drink, a small detail in the room: sometimes, a little is enough to make you smile. We choose colours because we want Tanoa to feel alive.

But the most beautiful colours walk through the door. They are the people, the languages that meet, the friends sharing a table and the person arriving alone who feels at ease. Everyone brings a story and a way of seeing the world. That mix gives the café its meaning.

Friendship lives in small gestures: saving a seat, sharing a pancake, asking about someone's day and listening to the answer. We want Tanoa to have room for those gestures. Brunch tastes better with good company, respect and care.

Safe spot for good hearts is our way of saying welcome. Your story does not have to look like ours to become part of it. We want to welcome neighbours and visitors to Lisbon, people bringing friends and people who simply need a table and a good coffee.

We keep building Tanoa with work, personality and the wish to share a little joy. Its next chapter also belongs to the people who come in, return and bring someone along.

You bring colour to our world. We bring flavour to yours.

Come as you are. Make yourself comfortable. Find us at Rua da Rosa 27, Bairro Alto, Lisbon. There is colour, flavour and a place for good hearts.
